Donovan Souppa
Artist Statement
Donovan Souppa is a photographer, artist, and conservationist born and raised in Southwest Florida. While he has always loved conservation and photography it was not until high school that he bridged the interconnections between both subjects. From documenting local wildlife here in Florida to capturing portraits in the Peruvian Amazon. Donovan has spent the last 10 years of his life forming connections with the natural world. When approaching his portraits Donovan strives to document the visual expression of mutual connection. He always tries to build relationships with his subjects, often sitting and maintaining space with the animals he is grateful to interact with. Donovan’s intention when capturing these portraits is to highlight moments of peace, comfort, and trust that exist within the natural world.
In recent years Donovan has experimented with film photography, in hopes of physically immortalizing some of the most fragile and spontaneous moments of his life. His work is reflective of the constantly lingering feeling of missing. The knowing that time doesn’t allow us the opportunity to see things forever in their current state. The passing of time is truly the tragedy of our lives… a sentiment that is present in all of his images.
